I am in a few photography and wedding vendor groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. I see questions over and over again about tipping and what should be expected.
Another vendor (not a photographer) asked if we should expect a tip and if so, how much we should expect.
Here is my take on tipping your photographer:
I never expect a tip, and if I do receive one, I don’t expect a certain amount.
Q: Should I tip the photographer?
A: It’s entirely up to you, the couple. If you feel that your photographer went above and beyond and you want to show your appreciation in a monetary gift, then tip away!
Q: How much should I tip my wedding photographer?
A: Again, it’s up to you. I don’t think 20% is a realistic number for photographers. For my packages that would mean a tip in excess of $600. I have received anywhere from $40-$300 as a tip and again, I don’t get a tip from every wedding. It’s not because I didn’t do my job well, but because it’s not food service. Tipping is not a standard in the wedding business, and I don’t think it should be.
